What’s Hiding In Your Soap?

What we often forget is that our skin is our largest organ and research has shown that it absorbs a whopping 60% of what we put on it. When you first start pursuing a healthier lifestyle, the first thing that we start paying attention to is what we eat and drink, but we should also be careful about the products we use on our skin! For instance, slathering yourself with scented soap whilst making you feel fresh and smell great, still have several dangerous toxic ingredients sneaking around in it that not only damages your skin, but affects your general health - keep reading to discover what toxins you should watch out for when purchasing soap!

Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS)
An extremely common ingredient in several products from commercial soaps and
shower gels, shampoos, toothpastes and detergents, sodium laurel sulfate (SLS)
essentially penetrates your skin and then strips it of its natural oil. SLS is especially dangerous as when it breaks down the natural oils on your skin, it makes it easier for other chemicals like triclosan or dioxane to be absorbed into your skin too.

Apart from causing hair loss, eczema and eye irritations, SLS can also cause hormonal imbalances leading to mood swings, depression etc. When combined with dioxane in a product, SLS is also believed to be carcinogenic - please be especially watchful for this combination of chemicals with all products you use.

Dioxane
A synthetic derivative of coconut, dioxane is often misconstrued to have many health benefits and products containing it are believed to be safe. However, this is far from true and dioxane is in reality a carcinogenic chemical that is easily absorbed through your skin and wrecks havoc on your central nervous system, liver, kidneys and brain over time.

To stay clear of this nasty chemical, pay close attention to the ingredients list when purchasing soap and watch out for other forms of it like PEG, ethoxylated
alcohols, polythene, polyethylene glycol, oxynol or a vague and confusing
description such as “derived from coconut.”

Triclosan
With a similar chemical form to pesticides, triclosan is not a chemical that you would ever expect to find lurking in your soap, but yet it is commonly found in many popular liquid soaps. Included for its amazing ability to kill bacteria, this antibacterial does however impact your immunity by speeding up antibiotic resistance. Apart from this, Triclosan is also known to affect the endocrine system and especially throws the female hormone, oestrogen completely off balance.

If you’re looking for an alternative to the commercially made soap that’s full of chemicals like sodium laurel sulfate, dioxane and triclosan, consider looking for
natural alternatives such as the Helinta Glycerin Free Soap or Healing Island handmade veggie soaps. Free from parabens, silicone, artificial colours and
fragrances, chlorine, phospates and phytochemicals, these impressive soaps contain all natural ingredients that actually nourish, soothe and heal your skin using coconut or almond cold pressed oils and other essential oils instead. Not only will you smell divine, but your skin will be clean and happy too!
